Dampness in Chinese Medicine — and Why It Matters in the UK

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dampness refers to excess moisture that accumulates in the body or affects us from our environment. Dampness is heavy and lingering, often leading to symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, loose stools, brain fog, joint stiffness, or a general feeling of heaviness in the body.

The UK’s cool, wet climate makes people particularly vulnerable to dampness, especially when combined with diets high in sugar, dairy, fried foods, or alcohol, or when digestion is weakened by stress or inactivity.

Acupuncture helps by supporting digestion and fluid metabolism so the body can clear excess damp more effectively. Common acupuncture points used to address dampness include:

  • SP9 (Yinlingquan)– helps resolve fluid retention and damp accumulation
  • ST36 (Zusanli)– strengthens digestion and boosts overall energy
  • SP6 (Sanyinjiao)– supports fluid balance and digestive function
  • Ren12– improves stomach and digestive function

Combined with dietary changes and staying warm and active, acupuncture can help people feel lighter, clearer, and more energised.

If you often feel sluggish or heavy, addressing dampness may be key to restoring your vitality.
